Our VLR ambassador, Jump jockey Jack Kennedy had another fantastic National Hunt season – it has been great to see him and his older brother Paddy carrying the VLR brand on his silks while racing in the UK and Ireland for the 2020/2021 season.
Jack was the youngest jockey in modern times to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup when 9/1 shot Minella Indo carried him to victory this year. That was a massive achievement for a 21-year-old, and his biggest win so far – but it was no surprise to those in the sport who have followed his career closely and saw him ride his first winner at the Cheltenham Festival at the age of 17 in 2017.
He has now passed 200 winners (214 to be precise) and his total prize money winnings are rapidly heading towards £4million. Like all National Hunt jockeys, he’s shown great courage in overcoming injuries. He suffered a broken leg in a fall at Leopardstown in February 2020 – a cruel blow at any time, but even more so because it was just weeks before Cheltenham. Showing all of the grit and determination that has won him fans across Ireland and the UK, he bounced back in fine style winning his first race after returning from injury when he piloted Get Rich Die Plyin to victory at Punchestown in September.
Paddy has also been an inspiration within the racing world and beyond because of his comeback from cancer and some serious racing injuries over the years.
We wish Paddy and Jack the best of luck in the 2021/2022 season and beyond.
